The Nationals' Fire Sale... Ugh

So, the Nationals' decade of competitiveness, including division titles and the 2019 World Series Championship, is over.  We waived the white flag, closed the window, and traded away 8 players at the deadline, including Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.  Obviously I am sad.  I don’t like the idea of my team giving up on a season so quickly, nor do I like to see so many guys get traded away.  Some of them were understandable.  Brad Hand wasn’t the best closer in the world, and his failures the last few weeks were the main reason why we had to sell.  Getting a young catcher in Riley Adams for him was a good pickup.  He immediately became our #13 overall prospect, which goes to show you how barren our minor league system had gotten.  In fact, all of the prospects we received, except for Lane Thomans, an OF we got from St. Louis for Jon Lester, and Seth Shuman, a pitcher we got in our trade with Oakland, made our Top 30.  The rebuild needed to happen soon.  It is just jarring that it is now here.  And seeing so many guys go is a big kick in the gut for a fanbase who really likes a lot of them, especially the guys from the 2019 team.

Easily the hardest thing to see was Max and Trea leaving.  Max will go into the Hall of Fame as a National, which is nice, and maybe we bring him back at the end of the year. But he obviously wanted a chance to win this year, so trading him away is understandable, albeit heartbreaking.  Trea, on the other hand, is the kind of piece you want to build around.  He and Soto should have been the faces of the organization going forward.  I guess they just didn’t want to commit to him long-term, which is rather annoying.  The organization has yet to really commit to a position player with the exception of Ryan Zimmerman, or bringing in a guy like Jayson Werth in free agency.  But they let Harper go.  They let Rendon go.  They traded Trea.  It doesn’t give me a lot of hope that they will do the right thing and sign Soto to a MASSIVE extension as soon as possible (my guess would be that it would take 12 years, $432 million, which would be the biggest contract ever in total money, and the same average annual value as Mike Trout.  Probably throw in an opt-out after year 8 so that he can renegotiate at 30.  But they need to get this done now/before next season).

In terms of what the Nats got back, pitcher Josiah Gray and catcher Keibert Ruiz are now our top 2 prospects.  Gray started on Monday and pitched well.  He is going to be a rotation piece from now on, and hopefully can develop into a dominant starter over time.  Ruiz hit a HR in his first game in AAA last night.  His bat will not be a problem.  He can hit really well and I am looking forward to having him up, probably next year.  He isn’t the best defensive catcher yet, so I think Davey said they will keep him in AAA to have him catch every day.  Riley Adams, one of the other catchers we got, is much better on defense, but doesn’t have the same hitting ability.  He will be a good backup. We got another catcher from Oakland as well, Drew Millas, but he has a ways to go before he is MLB ready.  I wish we had gotten a 3B prospect in one of these deals, because I am not sold on Carter Kieboom as our every day 3B.  He doesn’t hit enough, and his defense is not on the level we need it to be.  Unfortunately, we are stuck with him right now, though I would like to see us call up Jake Noll to give him a shot at some point.

The pitchers we got besides Gray seem to be a mixed bag.  Gerardo Carrillo was another pitcher we got from LA for Max and Trea.  He is a starter in AA right now, and only 22.  He may stick as a starter, but could make it to the majors faster as a reliever. Mason Thompson, who we got from the Padres for Daniel Hudson along with a very young shortstop named Jordy Barley, is already in our bullpen, so he will probably stay there long term.  Aldo Ramirez, who we got form Boston for Kyle Schwarber, is only 20, but apparently was the best young arm in their system.  He is now our #11 prospect, ahead of some of our past 1st round picks, and has a very good chance of being a middle-of-the-rotation starter in a few years. Finally, Richard Guasch was one of the pieces we got from Oakland for Yan Gomes and Josh Harrison.  He could be a starter or reliever, they aren’t sure yet.

So, it will be a tough couple of years now.  The Nats won’t be competitive the rest of this year and likely next year at the very least.  I hope that they sign Soto long term just so we know that we have that foundation to build around.  I hope they do other things to help keep the fans happy and also get back to winning quickly.  But hopefully Gray and Ruiz develop into stars, some of the other guys develop into solid pieces, and we can be back within a few years.  I’d really like to trade Corbin in the offseason to free up extra money, but I don’t see that happening. I’d love it if Strasburg got healthy and stayed healthy, even if he isn’t in his World Series MVP form.  Regardless, I have hope that we will be sooner rather than later.  I hope to look back on this fire sale and see it as the end of the Nats' first great run, but the beginning of their second.  I hope I see Soto here long-term, Gray and Ruiz as All Stars, 1st round pick Brady House as the new star in the infield, next to Yasel Antuna, Luis Garcia, and Drew Mendoza, all solid-to-great players on a playoff team.  If that happens, then the pain of this past week and these next couple of season will all be worth it.

189) Philadelphia Eagles- Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas

Is anyone convinced at this point the Eagles are all in on Jalen Hurts?  I'm not.

190) Cincinnati Bengals- Tony Poljan, TE, Virginia

191) Carolina Panthers (from Denver Broncos)- David Moore, OG, Grambling

192) Dallas Cowboys (from Detroit Lions)- Demetric Felton, RB/WR, UCLA

210) Baltimore Ravens- Paddy Fisher, ILB, Northwestern

211) Cleveland Browns- Deon Jackson, RB, Duke

212) Houston Texans (from New Orleans Saints)- Feleipe Franks, QB, Arkansas

Who knows what is going on with Deshaun Watson.  Might be safe to grab another young QB here.

213) Buffalo Bills- Kylen Granson, TE, SMU

214) Green Bay Packers- Talanoa Hufanga, S, USC

215) Tennessee Titans (from Kansas City Chiefs)- Josh Palmer, WR, Tennessee

216) Pittsburgh Steelers (from Tampa Bay Buccaneers)- Tarron Jackson, DE, Coastal Carolina

217) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (compensatory selection)- Amari Rodgers, WR, Clemson

218) New Orleans Saints (compensatory selection)- Ian Book, QB, Notre Dame

Hmm. Short QB with a decent arm.  Won a ton in college at a school in Indiana.  Where have I heard that before?  Book may not be Brees, but he certainly gives the Saints more QB depth.

219) Atlanta Falcons (compensatory selection)- Tony Fields II, ILB, West Virginia

220) Green Bay Packers (compensatory selection)- Rakeem Boyd, RB, Arkansas

221) Chicago Bears (compensatory selection)- Austin Faoliu, DT, Oregon

228) Chicago Bears (compensatory selection)- Pooka Williams Jr, RB, Kansas

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Round 5

Some well known college players are still on the board, and plenty of teams still have needs to fill going into Round 5.

Round 5

145) Jacksonville Jaguars- Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio State

Sermon went off during the Big Ten Championship and National Semifinals.  He was productive at Oklahoma and his one year at Ohio State was outstanding.  He had a shoulder injury in the National Championship game, but if he is recovered, he would be a steal this late.

146) New York Jets- Tommy Doyle, OG, Miami (OH)

147) Houston Texans- Caden Sterns, S, Texas

148) Atlanta Falcons- Kayode Awosika, OG, Buffalo

149) Cincinnati Bengals- Shaka Toney, DE, Penn State

150) Philadelphia Eagles- Drew Dalman, OC, Stanford

151) Carolina Panthers- Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC

152) Denver Broncos- Joshua Kaindoh, DE, Florida State

153) Detroit Lions- William Bradley-King, DE, Baylor

154) New York Jets (from New York Giants)- Ben Mason, FB/HB, Michigan

Think Kyle Juszczyk or Chris Cooley.  That is what the Jets could be getting here.

155) San Francisco 49ers- Jack Anderson, OG, Texas Tech

156) Miami Dolphins (from Philadelphia Eagles)- Shawn Davis, S, Florida

157) Minnesota Vikings- Adrian Ealy, OT, Oklahoma

158) Houston Texans (from New England Patriots)- Hamilcar Rashed Jr., OLB, Oregon State

159) Los Angeles Chargers- Paris Ford, S, Pittsburgh

160) Arizona Cardinals- Robert Hainsey, OT/G, Notre Dame

161) Buffalo Bills (from Las Vegas Raiders)- Larry Roundtree III, RB, Missouri

162) Las Vegas Raiders (from Miami Dolphins)- Divine Deablo, S, Virginia Tech

BEST NAME IN THE DRAFT!

163) Washington Football Team- Jacob Harris, WR/TE, UCF

Immediate matchup nightmare if he can transition to TE full time.  6'5, long strides, fast, and has a nose for the end zone. Just needs to work on his blocking and adding some bulk to his frame.

164) Chicago Bears- Quincy Roche, DE, Miami

165) Indianapolis Colts- Frank Darby, WR, Arizona State

166) Tennessee Titans- JaCoby Stevens, S, LSU

167) Las Vegas Raiders (from Seattle Seahawks)- Chauncey Golston, DE, Iowa

168) Minnesota Vikings (from  Baltimore Ravens)-  TJ Vasher, WR, Texas Tech

169) Cleveland Browns (from Los Angeles Rams)- Michal Menet, OC, Penn State

170) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Cleveland Browns)- Quinton Bohanna, DT, Kentucky

171) Baltimore Ravens- Alaric Jackson, OG, Iowa

182) Atlanta Falcons (compensatory selection)- Elijah Mitchell, RB, Louisiana

183) Atlanta Falcons (compensatory selection)- Seth Williams, WR, Auburn

184) Baltimore Ravens (compensatory selection)- Josh Ball, OT, Marshall

123) Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami Dolphins)- Ben Cleveland, OG, Georgia

124) Washington Football Team- Cameron McGrone, ILB, Michigan

125) Minnesota Vikings (from Chicago Bears)- Tyler Vaughns, WR, USC

126) Tennessee Titans- Daelin Hayes, DE, Notre Dame

127) Indianapolis Colts- Tre Brown, CB, Oklahoma

128) Pittsburgh Steelers- Elerson Smith, OLB, Northern Iowa

129) Seattle Seahawks- Bobby Brown III, DT, USC

130) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams)- Bryan Mills, CB, NC Central

131) Baltimore Ravens- Marlon Tuipulotu, DT, USC

132) Cleveland Browns- Ar'darius Washington, S, TCU

133) New Orleans Saints- Monty Rice, ILB, Georgia

134) Minnesota Vikings (from Buffalo Bills; conditional)- Jamien Sherwood, S, Auburn

135) Green Bay Packers- KJ Britt, ILB, Auburn

136) Baltimore Ravens (from Kansas City Chiefs)- Osiris Mitchell, WR, Mississippi State

137) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State

138) Dallas Cowboys (compensatory selection)- Matt Bushman, TE, BYU

142) Green Bay Packers (compensatory selection)- Jaylon Moore, OT/G, Western Michigan

143) Minnesota Vikings (compensatory selection)- Justin Hilliard, ILB, Ohio State

144) Kansas City Chiefs (compensatory selection)- Trey Hill, OC, Georgia

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Round 3 is the round of the second-tier QB.  Yes, a few of them will likely come off the board in Round 2 on Friday, but I don't have them there.  This is an appropriate spot for them to go to teams that can let them sit for a year or two to develop.

Round 3

65) Jacksonville Jaguars- Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue

66) New York Jets- Payton Turner, DE, Houston

67) Houston Texans- Nico Collins, WR, Michigan

Remember when Houston had DeAndre Hopkins?  Then traded him away?  Man, that was silly.

68) Atlanta Falcons- Jevon Holland, S, Oregon

69) Cincinnati Bengals- Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio State

70) Philadelphia Eagles- Aaron Robinson, CB, UCF

71) Denver Broncos- Davis Mills, QB, Stanford

John Elway just traded for Teddy Bridgewater, but also updated his contract so it doesn't go beyond this year.  I think the Broncos take a chance on another Stanford QB who has a ton of potential, but just isn't ready yet.

72) Detroit Lions- Andre Cisco, S, Syracuse

If Cisco had been healthy this year, I think he might be a 1st round pick.  He is a ball hawk free safety who was First Team All American as a freshman.  If he has recovered from his ACL injury fully, he should be back to his old ways.

73) Carolina Panthers- Aaron Banks, OG, Notre Dame

74) Washington Football Team (from San Francisco 49ers)- Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M

The Football Team will likely address the QB position at some point in this draft.  Why not here with one of their 3rd round picks?  Kellen Mond was the Senior Bowl MVP, put up huge numbers at Texas A&M, and is a true dual threat QB in the mold of Cam Newton, Dak Prescott, or Colin Kaepernick. He would be a great fit in the WFT offense.

75) Dallas Cowboys- Trey Smith, OG, Tennessee

76) New York Giants- Benjamin St-Juste, CB, Minnesota

77) Los Angeles Chargers- Shakur Brown, CB, Michigan State

78) Minnesota Vikings- Rashad Weaver, DE, Pittsburgh

79) Las Vegas Raiders (from Arizona Cardinals)- Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa

80) Las Vegas Raiders- Jay Tufele, DT, USC

81) Miami Dolphins- Michael Carter, RB, North Carolina

82) Washington Football Team- Chris Rumph II, OLB, Duke

83) Chicago Bears- Kyle Trask, QB, Florida

The Bears finally get their QB.  Trask led FBS with 43 passing TDs in 2020.  He helped make the Gators relevant again.  He was a Heisman finalist.  He can come in, sit behind Andy Dalton for a year, and learn the offense.  He is also a good bet to be kept around by the next regime just based on his talent and frame alone.

84) Philadelphia Eagles (from Indianapolis Colts)- Dayo Odeyingbo, DE, Vanderbilt

85) Tennessee Titans- Alim McNeill, DT, NC State

86) New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks)- Landon Dickerson, OC/G, Alabama

87) Pittsburgh Steelers- Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford

88) Los Angeles Rams- Dan Moore, OT, Texas A&M

89) Cleveland Browns- Marco Wilson, CB, Florida

90) Minnesota Vikings (from Baltimore Ravens)- D’Wayne Eskridge, WR, Western Michigan

91) Cleveland Browns (from New Orleans Saints)- Jaylen Twyman, DT, Pittsburgh

92) Green Bay Packers- Robert Rochell, CB, Central Arkansas

93) Buffalo Bills- Josh Myers, OC, Ohio State

94) Baltimore Ravens (from Kansas City Chiefs)- Shaun Wade, CB, Ohio State

95) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Shi Smith, WR, South Carolina

96) New England Patriots (compensatory selection)- DJ Daniel, CB, Georgia

97) Los Angeles Chargers (compensatory selection)- Brevin Jordan, TE, Miami

98) New Orleans Saints (compensatory selection)- Cade Johnson, WR, SD State

99) Dallas Cowboys (compensatory selection)- Richard LeCounte, S, Georgia

100) Tennessee Titans (compensatory selection)- D’Ante Smith, OT, East Carolina

101) Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams; compensatory selection)- Rachad Wildgoose, CB, Wisconsin

102) San Francisco 49ers (special compensatory selection)- Osa Odighizuwa, DT, UCLA

103) Los Angeles Rams (special compensatory selection)- Milton Williams, DT/DE, Louisiana Tech

104) Baltimore Ravens (special compensatory selection)- Trill Williams, S, Syracuse

105) New Orleans Saints (special compensatory selection)- Hunter Long, TE, Boston College

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Round 2 of the Mock sees a run on offensive linemen, a bunch of running backs, and our first Orangeman off the board.  Enjoy!

Round 2

33) Jacksonville Jaguars- Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame

You draft a new franchise QB, you have to protect him.

34) New York Jets- Elijah Molden, CB/S, Washington

35) Atlanta Falcons- Ronnie Perkins, DE, Oklahoma

36) Miami Dolphins (from Houston Texans)- Jalen Mayfield, OT, Michigan

37) Philadelphia Eagles- Jamin Davis, ILB, Kentucky

I have seen David everywhere from mid-first round to the 5th.  I have no idea how.  I think he belongs right here.

38) Cincinnati Bengals- Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss

39) Carolina Panthers- Asante Samuel Jr., CB, Florida State

Man, am I old.  I remember Asante Sr. getting drafted.

40) Denver Broncos- Samuel Cosmi, OT/G, Texas

41) Detroit Lions- Nick Bolton, ILB, Missouri

42) New York Giants- Alex Leatherwood, OT/G, Alabama

43) San Francisco 49ers- Kelvin Joseph, CB, Kentucky

44) Dallas Cowboys- Joe Tryon, DE, Washington

45) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Minnesota Vikings)- Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State

46) New England Patriots- Carlos Basham Jr., DE, Wake Forest

47) Los Angeles Chargers- Tutu Atwell, WR, Louisville

48) Las Vegas Raiders- Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota

49) Arizona Cardinals- Javonte Williams, RB, North Carolina

50) Miami Dolphins- Jayson Oweh, DE, Penn State

51) Washington Football Team- Richie Grant, FS, UCF

The WFT desperately needs a true free safety, and Grant may be the best of the bunch.

52) Chicago Bears- Ifeatu Melifonwu, CB, Syracuse

CUSE!  I don't know how our dismal program produces good players, but Iffy is a damn good CB, and the first of 3 DBs likely to be drafted from the Orange.

53) Tennessee Titans- Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia

54) Indianapolis Colts- Walker Little, OT, Stanford

55) Pittsburgh Steelers- Creed Humphrey, C/G, Oklahoma

56) Seattle Seahawks- Quinn Meinerz, G, Wisconsin-Whitewater

57) Los Angeles Rams- Chazz Surratt, ILB, North Carolina

58) Kansas City Chiefs (from Baltimore Ravens)- Joseph Ossai, DE, Texas

59) Cleveland Browns- Jabril Cox, LB, LSU

Cox could go higher, especially if WFT prioritizes a needed LB upgrade over safety.

60) New Orleans Saints- Patrick Jones, DE, Pitt

61) Buffalo Bills- Eric Stokes, CB, Georgia

62) Green Bay Packers- Tylan Wallace, WR, Oklahoma State

63) Kansas City Chiefs- Dillon Radunz, OT, ND State

Patrick Mahomes will drop to his knees and weep with thanks that the Chiefs are bringing him more protection.

64) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- James Hudson III, OT, Cincinnati

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1

After all, it's only one more sleep til DRAFT DAY!  Yes my friends, it is the most wonderful weekend of the year.  The NFL Draft begins Thursday night, live, from scenic Cleveland, Ohio! Hopefully it won't be a super-spreader event, and instead will just be a super good time.  Here are my projections for Round 1.  As per usual, I do not project trades.  I seem to be one of the last people to do this, cause even the glorious Mel Kiper Jr is projecting trades now.  It just complicates everything, so I will stick to teams drafting where they are currently slotted.  Here we go.  The Jacksonville Jaguars are now on the clock!

1) Jacksonville Jaguars- Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

Well, this one is a no-brainer, huh?  He has been the top QB prospect for over 2 years, so there is a reason why he will go #1.  Urban Meyer will be pleased.

2) New York Jets- Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Oh Jets fans.  I hope this pick works for you.  Wilson was really good last year at BYU. Some say he has Mahomes-eqsue upside.  Not sure many Jets fans will be there in Cleveland to boo the pick, so it might be the warmest welcome a Jets draft pick has had in a while.

3) San Francisco 49ers- Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

Yeah, the 49ers traded up to take someone that may have actually been there at #12.  But, I think Kyle Shanahan knows who he wants, and didn't want to take the chance of missing out.  Mac Jones ran Bama's offense perfectly.  He won't have the same weapons that he did with the Tide, but he is a safe bet to at least be a solid QB.

4) Atlanta Falcons- Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State

Here is where the draft really starts, assuming everyone is correct about Jones going #3.  Yes, the Falcons could take Sewell, Chase, or Pitts here.  But QBs like Justin Fields don't come along every day.  Matt Ryan turns 36 in a few weeks.  Maybe it is time to take the next franchise QB, especially since next year's class doesn't look as good as this one.

5) Cincinnati Bengals- Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

Yes, the Bengals added some OL in free agency.  No, that should not stop them from taking the top tackle in the draft.  They need to protect Joe Burrow, and Sewell is a no-doubt anchor on the left side of the line for years to come.

6) Miami Dolphins- Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU

Speaking of helping young QBs, I am sure Tua will be lobbying for one of his old Alabama teammates with this pick.  Instead, the Dolphins will take Chase, who ranks just slightly higher than Smith and Waddle.

7) Detroit Lions- DeVonte Smith, WR, Alabama

Mr. Heisman goes to Motown, who need to replace Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay.  This may be a rebuilding year for the Lions, so adding in a consistent and technically sound WR is a great building block.

8) Carolina Panthers- Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

The Panthers got their QB in their trade for Sam Darnold.  So, they get him a weapon in the form of the (apparent) can't miss superstar TE.  Kyle Pitts can slot in as a Day 1 starter, creates nightmare matchups for smaller corners and slower linebackers, and should provide Darnold a consistent weapon he never really had in NY.

9) Denver Broncos- Micha Parsons, ILB, Penn State

There is a QB on the board... but I think the Broncos will pass.  Trey Lance needs to sit a season, and the Broncos don't really want to wait on a QB.  If it was Fields or Jones, I think they jump.  Instead, they fill a need and take the best defensive player available.

10) Dallas Cowboys- Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

Rumor has it Jerry Jones is obsessed with Kyle Pitts, but he isn't available.  So, the Cowboys try to fix that perennially leaky secondary with the son of an all-pro. While Horn and Farley may have more potential, Surtain is the safer pick, and can team with his old Bama buddy Trevon Diggs.

11) New York Giants- Gregory Rousseau, DE, Miami

While another weapon for Daniel Jones might be nice, the Giants need a pass rusher.  Rousseau grades a little lower than Kwity Paye, but he is huge, super athletic, and reminds me of a young JPP.  The G-Men won't pass on that kind of potential.

12) Philadelphia Eagles- Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama

One of these Eagles WR choices will have to pan out eventually, right?  They need weapons, and Waddle is the best on the board.

13) Los Angeles Chargers- Rashawn Slater, OT/G, Northwestern

The Chargers found their franchise QB in Justin Herbert.  Now they just need to make sure they can protect him.  Slater can play either tackle or guard spot, but I see him starting at LT to protect Herbert's blind side.

14) Minnesota Vikings- Alijah Vera-Tucker, OG, USC

Another versatile lineman.  Vera-Tucker is the top rated guard on the board, but can also play left tackle as he did all last season.  The Vikings' biggest need is on the OL, so this is a no-brainer pick.

15) New England Patriots- Trey Lance, QB, ND State

There it is!  The Patriots finally choose their next great QB, they hope.  Lance can come in, sit behind Cam Newton for a year, and learn the Patriot Way.  Is there a chance he is gone before 15?  Of course.  But I don't project trades.

16) Arizona Cardinals- Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

These next two picks could be a coin toss.  While there is some concern over Farley's recover from COVID and an offseason surgery, he has been given the green light, and looks all good.  His tape shows he is a 1st round pick, and the Cardinals need to replace Patrick Peterson.

17) Las Vegas Raiders- Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina

The Raiders also need help on the outside, and Horn is the last of the top 3 CBs on the board.  He may be more fluid than Surtain, has excellent size, and has excelled for 3 season at South Carolina.  We can only hope he can celebrate an interception as well as his father, former WR Joe Horn, celebrated a touchdown.

18) Miami Dolphins- Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, OLB, Notre Dame

Tua already has some offensive help, so the Dolphins go defense with JOK.  He is a rangy, playmaking LB who can assist in coverage or the pass rush.  A truly versatile defensive force.  I could also see the Dolphins going OL here with Darrisaw, in which case JOK would likely find his way to DC.

19) Washington Football Team- Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech

Trent Williams is gone and is never coming back.  While Geron Christian and Cornelius Lucas have been fine, Darrisaw would be an upgrade, especially for the run game.  WFT needs help at LB and S as well, so they could look there.  Also, if a top QB somehow falls to a spot where they could trade up ahead of the Patriots, that could be an option as well.  If they draft a WR, I will flip out.

20) Chicago Bears- Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State

Boy, did the Bears want a QB to fall here.  But, sadly, no one did, so the Bears will bring in Jenkins, who can anchor their OL for whoever the next QB after Andy Dalton is.

21) Indianapolis Colts- Kwity Paye, DE, Michigan

Remember when the Colts had Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis? Two of the best DEs in the league?  Well, their pass rush hasn't been the same since those two potential Hall of Famers retired.  Enter Paye, who may be the best in the draft, and the Colts can start to dream again.

22) Tennessee Titans- Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida

The Titans lost Corey Davis, who finally decided to have a good year in his walk year.  Interesting.  Anyway, they can pair the explosive and elusive Toney with AJ Brown's strength for one of the better young receiving tandems in the league.

23) New York Jets- Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson

The Jets didn't get the Clemson QB, but they can take his running back!  Etienne is a playmaker, who would be an upgrade over (looks at Jets roster) Tevin Coleman?  Really?  Yeah, draft Etienne now and never look back.  A young QB's best friend is a solid running game.

24) Pittsburgh Steelers- Najee Harris, RB, Alabama

An old QBs best friend is a solid running game as well!  The Steelers are in need of a replacement for James Connor, and Harris is the best of the bunch.  A powerful running back, he just makes so much sense at this pick.  Almost too much sense...

25) Jacksonville Jaguars- Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU

The Jags have a lot of picks in this draft.  They will fill a lot of needs.  Help in the secondary is one of those needs, and Moehrig is the top safety available. The Thorpe Award winner will bring much-needed ability to the league's 2nd worst defense.

26) Cleveland Browns- Jaelan Phillips, DE, Miami

Yes, the Browns just signed Jadeveon Clowney, but they could use more pass rushing depth.  Phillips was a monster at Miami, and assuming his medicals check out, could learn from two of the best and then take over in a season or two.

27) Baltimore Ravens- Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU

The Ravens were so desperate for wideouts last year that they signed Dez Bryant.  They spend one of their two first round picks on Marshall, who has the size (6'2.5) to compliment Hollywood Brown's speed in the passing game.

28) New Orleans Saints- Greg Newsome II, CB, Northwestern

Sean Payton said today that CB is a position that the Saints need to address, so why not take the best one available? Newsome is a smart player, has great size, and the NFL.com comp is Darius Slay.  Yeah, that will do.

29) Green Bay Packers- Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama

Now, if it was me, I might consider a WR here to keep future Jeopardy host Aaron Rodgers happy.  But, the Packers don't do that.  So, I turn to one of their biggest needs, the defensive line.  While they are bringing back their starters from last year, Barmore would be an upgrade.  Just ask Notre Dame and Ohio State how good Barmore can be.

30) Buffalo Bills- Zaven Collins, OLB, Tulsa

The Bills seem to just be a piece or two away from dominance.  Could that piece come in the form of a pass rusher?  Collins is a beast, and could help immediately.  If the Bills find themselves in the AFC title game vs the Chiefs again, they will probably want more than 1 sack for 0 years, right?

31) Baltimore Ravens- Azeez Ojulari, OLB, Georgia

The Ravens got this pick for Orlando Brown, but will use it to help their pass rush.  Their starting OLBs only had 4 total sacks last year.  Ojulari is a protype 3-4 OLB, and will create havoc for opposing QBs.

32) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Levi Onwuzurike, DL, Washington

The Champs are bringing back all 22 starters from their Super Bowl-winning team.  That is unheard of.  So, really, this is a depth pick.  Three of their D-linemen ar eon one year contracts, including Ndamukong Suh.  Onwuzurike provides depth for the future, and he is also damn good.

So there is Round 1!  The rest will be posted later today, and will be modified up til the Draft in case there are any changes.  Thank you so much for reading!

The Mock Draft is Coming!

 Hi friends!

Well, it has been a year, huh?  Somehow, while being trapped at home, I didn't choose to write a lot more in my blog cause... well... did sports really happen last year?  I don't think baseball really happened, so I will choose to continue calling my Nats the reigning champs.  Basketball went til August or something.  At least the NFL was pretty normal, and it seems like the Draft will be pretty normal this year!

I have finished my 2021 NFL Mock Draft!  I am just waiting til tomorrow to post it to make sure there aren't any more last minute trades that I will have to deal with.  I hope you will read it and enjoy it when it arrives.  And, of course, watch the Draft this weekend!
