160) Los Angeles Chargers- Charlie Kolar, TE, Iowa State

161) New Orleans Saints- Jake Ferguson, TE, Wisconsin

174) Cincinnati Bengals- James Mitchell, TE, Virginia Tech

175) Los Angeles Rams- Jeffrey Gunter, DE, Coastal Carolina

176) Dallas Cowboys (compensatory selection)- Isaiah Thomas, DE, Oklahoma

Completing the NBA Hall of Famer names, along with Bryant and Paul, is Isaiah Thomas.  Wish we lasted one more pick and went to Detroit.

177) Detroit Lions (compensatory selection)- Tariq Castro-Fields, CB, Penn State

178) Dallas Cowboys (compensatory selection)- Abram Smith, RB, Baylor

179) Indianapolis Colts (compensatory selection)- Marquan McCall, DT, Kentucky

2 more rounds to go!

JFLANland 2022 NFL Mock Draft- Round 4

The final day of the NFL Draft begins with Round 4.  A ton of future Pro Bowlers or Hall of Famers could be taken on Day 3.  Who will your team take?

Round 4

106) Jacksonville Jaguars- Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State

107) Houston Texans (from Detroit Lions through Cleveland Browns)- Luke Fortner, C, Kentucky

108) Houston Texans- Aaron Hansford, ILB, Texas A&M

109) Seattle Seahawks (from New York Jets)- Logan Bruss, OG, Wisconsin

110) Baltimore Ravens (from New York Giants)- Neil Farrell Jr, DT, LSU

111) New York Jets (from Carolina Panthers)- Zachary Carter, DT, Florida

112) New York Giants (from Chicago Bears)- Dohnovan West, C, Arizona State

113) Washington Commanders- Darrian Beavers, ILB, Cincinnati

There are many linebackers I like more that are already off the board, but even though ILB is a huge hole for the Commanders, they don't seem to be that worried.  Beavers is the best available, an old-school middle linebacker and Butkus finalist, but may not have the range of Dean or Lloyd. He should at least push 2021 first rounder Jamin Davis to be better, as he may take Davis' playing time.

114) Atlanta Falcons- Micheal Clemons, EDGE, Texas A&M

115) Denver Broncos- Kellen Diesch, OT, Arizona State

116) Denver Broncos (from Seattle Seahawks)- Josh Ezeudu, OG, UNC

117) New York Jets (from Minnesota Vikings)- Damone Clark, ILB, LSU

118) Cleveland Browns- JoJo Domann, S/LB, Nebraska

119) Baltimore Ravens- Dai’Jean Dixon, WR, Nicholls State

120) New Orleans Saints- Carson Strong, QB, Nevada

Jameis Winston re-signed with the Saints, but not for true starter money.  I think that the Saints want to add a young QB as competition, and are thrilled with Strong falls into their lap. Strong has first round talent and a cannon arm, but lingering knee issues and a gun-slinger mentality have him fall to Day 3. Still, I wouldn't be shocked if he started a game for the Saints this season.

121) Kansas City Chiefs (from Miami Dolphins)- Pierre Strong Jr, RB, South Dakota State

122) Indianapolis Colts- Damarri Mathis, CB, Pittsburgh

123) Los Angeles Chargers- Justyn Ross, WR, Clemson

124) Philadelphia Eagles- John Ridgeway, DT, Arkansas

125) Miami Dolphins (from Pittsburgh Steelers)- Max Mitchell, OT, Louisiana

126) Las Vegas Raiders- Matt Waletzko, OT, North Dakota

127) New England Patriots- Verone McKinley III, S, Oregon

128) Baltimore Ravens (from Arizona Cardinals)- Chris Paul, OG, Tulsa

Cobe Bryant was drafted earlier.  Now Chris Paul. Cue the NBA on TNT music.

129) Dallas Cowboys- Alontae Taylor, S, Tennessee

130) Buffalo Bills- Otito Ogbonnia, DT, UCLA

131) Tennessee Titans- Dominique Robinson, OLB, Miami (OH)

132) Green Bay Packers- David Bell, WR, Purdue

133) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Cole Turner, TE, Nevada

The Bucs still don't seem to know if Gronk will be back, so they take a TE just in case.

134) San Francisco 49ers- Romeo Doubs, WR, Nevada

135) Kansas City Chiefs- Thayer Munford, OT, Ohio State

136) Cincinnati Bengals- Eric Johnson, DT, Missouri State

137) Carolina Panthers (from Los Angeles Rams through Houston Texans)- Rasheed Walker, OT, Penn State

138) Pittsburgh Steelers (compensatory selection)- Kyle Phillips, WR, UCLA

139) Baltimore Ravens (compensatory selection)- Sam Williams, EDGE, Ole Miss

140) Green Bay Packers (compensatory selection)- Malcolm Rodriguez, ILB, Oklahoma State

141) Baltimore Ravens (compensatory selection)- Dameon Pierce, RB, Florida

142) Los Angeles Rams (compensatory selection)- Derion Kendrick, CB, Georgia

143) Tennessee Titans (compensatory selection)- Nick Zakelj, OT, Fordham

Only a few rounds left!  Thank you for reading!

JFLANland 2022 NFL Mock Draft- Round 3

How will Round 3 go down?  How well will your team be positioned on Friday night?  Let's find out!

Round 3

65) Jacksonville Jaguars- Nick Cross, S, Maryland

66) Detroit Lions- Wan'Dale Robinson, WR, Kentucky

67) New York Giants- Greg Dulcich, TE, UCLA

68) Houston Texans- Calvin Austin III, WR, Memphis

69) New York Jets- Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota

70) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Carolina Panthers)- Cameron Jurgens, C, Nebraska

71) Chicago Bears- Josh Paschal, DE, Kentucky

72) Seattle Seahawks- Cameron Thomas, DE, San Diego State

73) Indianapolis Colts (from Washington Commanders)- Nicholas Petit-Frere, OT, Ohio State

74) Atlanta Falcons- Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State

75) Denver Broncos- Cobe Bryant, CB, Cincinnati

Obviously, a member of the All-Name team.

76) Baltimore Ravens- Troy Anderson, ILB, Montana State

77) Minnesota Vikings- Dylan Parham, C/G, Memphis

78) Cleveland Browns- Khalil Shakir, WR, Boise State

79) Los Angeles Chargers- Darian Kinnard, OT/G, Kentucky

80) Houston Texans (from New Orleans Saints)- Tariq Woolen, CB, UTSA

81) New York Giants (from Miami Dolphins)- Channing Tindall, LB, Georgia

82) Atlanta Falcons (from Indianapolis Colts)- Drake Jackson, OLB, USC

83) Philadelphia Eagles- Kerby Joseph, S, Illinois

84) Pittsburgh Steelers- Luke Goedeke, OT, Central Michigan

85) New England Patriots- Marcus Jones, CB, Houston

86) Las Vegas Raiders- Sean Rhyan, OT, UCLA

The Raiders are finally on the clock!  They traded away their first two picks as part of the Davonte Adams trade, and now look to address some other needs.  At the moment, they don't know who is playing right tackle. Alex Leatherwood may be better at guard, so drafting Sean Rhyan gives them a versatile player who could shine at right tackle or inside if Leatherwood finds his footing on the outside.

87) Arizona Cardinals- DeAngelo Malone, DE/OLB, Western Kentucky

88) Dallas Cowboys- Bo Melton, WR, Rutgers

89) Buffalo Bills- Brandon Smith, ILB, Penn State

90) Tennessee Titans- Marquis Hayes, OG, Oklahoma

91) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Myjai Sanders, OLB, Cincinnati

92) Green Bay Packers- Isaiah Likely, TE, Coastal Carolina

93) San Francisco 49ers- Zyon McCollum, CB, Sam Houston State

94) Kansas City Chiefs- Josh Jobe, CB, Alabama

95) Cincinnati Bengals- Martin Emerson, CB, Mississippi State

96) Denver Broncos (from Los Angeles Rams)- Jelani Woods, TE, Virginia

Noah Fant was part of the Wilson trade, so they replace him with Woods, a massive athlete who is still developing and learning how to be a tight end.

97) Detroit Lions (compensatory selection)- JT Woods, S, Baylor

98) New Orleans Saints (compensatory selection)- Bryan Cook, S, Cincinnati

99) Cleveland Browns (special compensatory selection)- Amare Barno, OLB, Virginia Tech

100) Baltimore Ravens (special compensatory selection)- Matthew Butler, DT, Tennessee

101) Philadelphia Eagles (from New Orleans Saints; special compensatory selection)- Brian Asamoah, LB, Oklahoma

102) Miami Dolphins (from San Francisco 49ers; special compensatory selection)- James Cook, RB, Georgia

The Dolphins' first pick is used to bring in a weapon for Tua and the revamped offense.  Cook is a great threat out of the backfield, both running and receiving.  The Fins may have other holes to fill, but they get great bang for their buck with their first selection.

103) Kansas City Chiefs (special compensatory selection)- Velus Jones Jr., WR, Tennessee

104) Los Angeles Rams (special compensatory selection)- Kingsley Enagbare, DE/OLB, South Carolina

The Super Bowl champions, who don't much care for the Draft yet draft really well, finally take their first pick.  They take Enagbare, an edge rusher who may be asked to add on some pounds and move to the Dline full time.

105) San Francisco 49ers (special compensatory selection)- Isaiah Spiller, RB, Texas A&M

That concludes Round 3 and Day 2.  Check back for my picks for Rounds 4-7!

JFLANland 2022 NFL Mock Draft- Round 2

Back on the clock with more picks, less analysis, and some fun surprises.  Let me know what you think!

Round 2

33) Jacksonville Jaguars- Bernhard Raimann, OT, Central Michigan

Protecting Trevor Lawrence should be priority #1 now that the Jags added Hutchinson in Round 1

34) Detroit Lions- Quay Walker, LB, Georgia

35) New York Jets- Boye Mafe, OLB/DE, Minnesota

36) New York Giants- Lewis Cine, S, Georgia

37) Houston Texans- Jalen Pitre, S, Baylor

38) New York Jets (from Carolina Panthers)- Christian Harris, ILB, Alabama

39) Chicago Bears- Skyy Moore, WR, Western Michigan

The Bears' first pick of the 2022 Draft sees them bring a new weapon in for Justin Fields.  Skyy Moore has raw talent and ability now with a proven track record of production.  If he keeps honing his craft, he could develop into a star.

40) Seattle Seahawks (from Denver Broncos)- Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss

You may be buying that the Seahawks really love Drew Lock, but I don't, so with Matt Corral falling to them, they make sure he doesn't fall further.  Corral has a great arm and is a gritty player, sometimes to a fault.  He hasn't learned to slide or get out of bounds yet, and his smaller frame doesn't allow him to take all of those hits without consequences.  While me may not have the gifts or talent that Pickett or Willis have, he may be the most well-rounded QB coming out of college. Plus, he may get to throw to Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf right away, and who wouldn't want that?

41) Seattle Seahawks- Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington

42) Indianapolis Colts (from Washington Commanders)- George Pickens, WR, Georgia

The Colts' first pick of the Draft is the speedy Pickens from Georgia.  He has good burst and sub-4.5 ability, as well as great size for a team that needs more WR help.

43) Atlanta Falcons- Breece Hall, RB, Iowa State

The first RB off the board, Hall will be able to flourish in a RPO offense with Marcus Mariota.

44) Cleveland Browns- Travis Jones, DT, Connecticut

With the Browns first pick, they go big along the D Line.  Jones would eat up interior blockers and help their pass rush and run defense.

45) Baltimore Ravens- Arnold Ebiketie, DE/OLB, Penn State

46) Minnesota Vikings- Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State

First TE off the board.  McBride has great size and production.  He will immediately replace Tyler Conklin.

47) Washington Commanders (from Indianapolis Colts)- Alec Pierce, WR, Cincinnati

The Commanders have their #1 in Terry McLaurin, and a slot WR in Curtis Samuel.  Adding Pierce brings in a big, powerful possession receiver who can also make plays with his surprising speed.

48) Chicago Bears (from Los Angeles Chargers)- Tyler Smith, OT/G, Tulsa

49) New Orleans Saints- Kenneth Walker III, RB, Michigan State

50) Kansas City Chiefs (from Miami Dolphins)- David Ojabo, DE/OLB, Michigan

The Chiefs are the kind of team that afford to take Ojabo, who will miss the entire 2022 season after getting hurt at his pro day, and wait til he is healthy.  Ojabo was a mid-1st talent, so this could be a steal.

51) Philadelphia Eagles- Kaiir Elam, CB, Florida

52) Pittsburgh Steelers- Perrion Winfrey, IDL, Oklahoma

53) Green Bay Packers (from Las Vegas Raiders)- Phidarian Mathis, IDL, Alabama

54) New England Patriots- Logan Hall, DL, Houston

55) Arizona Cardinals- Roger McCreary, CB, Auburn

56) Dallas Cowboys- Nik Bonitto, OLB, Oklahoma

57) Buffalo Bills- John Metchie III, WR, Alabama

58) Atlanta Falcons (from Tennessee Titans)- Sam Howell, QB, UNC

Another QB!  I don't buy that Mariota is the long term answer for the Falcons, and Howell has the ability to thrive in the NFL.  That said, he may need to sit and learn for at least half the season.  Then, he can come in, take control of the team, and show everyone why he was in the conversation for the first overall pick before the 2021 season.

59) Green Bay Packers- Abraham Lucas, OT, Washington State

60) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DeMarvin Leal, DL, Texas A&M

61) San Francisco 49ers- Cole Strange, G, Chattanooga

The Niners' first pick in the Draft, addressing a need for depth and youth along their interior OL.  He can also play center, which is another need for the 49ers.

62) Kansas City Chiefs- Jalen Tolbert, WR, South Alabama

63) Cincinnati Bengals- Leo Chenal, ILB, Wisconsin

64) Denver Broncos (from Los Angeles Rams)- Chad Muma, ILB, Wyoming

The first pick for the Broncos is an extremely talented middle linebacker from Wyoming.  He has 125 tackles last year and was a Butkus Award finalist.  He can also be a special teams wiz as he develops.

JFLANland 2022 NFL Mock Draft- Round 1

It's the most wonderful time of the year: Draft Week!  Yes, the NFL Draft begins this Thursday, and this is one of the weirder drafts we have had.  There is no true consensus top pick, the QB ranks are all over the place, and 8 teams currently have multiple first round picks.  So, I have tried my best to bring you my thoughts on what every team should do, based on their needs.  I also don't project trades, though there are most certainly going to be some.  Anyway, here we go!  The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock:

1) Jacksonville Jaguars- Aiden Hutchinson, DE, Michigan

Apparently the Jags are down to 4 players on their board for the #1 pick.  While I think they should go OL to protect Trevor Lawrence, the signing of Brandon Scherff and tagging Cam Robinson mean that they are able to address the DL first.  Aiden Hutchinson is possibly the safest pick in the draft off the edge.  He has the talent and the production, and will immediately help the Jags poor defense.

2) Detroit Lions- Travon Walker, DE, Georgia

Detroit is angry, because they wanted Hutchinson.  They decide to stick to their guns of taking an edge rusher, and draft the high-ceiling Walker instead.  While the tape is not nearly as impressive as Hutchinson, Walker has the measurables and potential to be an even better player.  It is a bit of a risk, but the Lions decide to go for the potential... or consider trading up to make sure they get Hutchinson.

3) Houston Texans- Evan Neal, OT, Alabama

The Texans need absolutely everything, so having the best all-around OL prospect fall to them at 3 is not a bad thing at all.  Neal was a SEC All-Freshman player at right guard.  He won a National Championship as the Tide's starting right tackle his sophomore.  This past season, he was a first team All-SEC second team All-American at left tackle.  he is a plug-and-play starter Day 1, likely at right guard, joining Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard as the tackles, suddenly giving the Texans a very solid O-Line.

4) New York Jets- Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, CB, Cincinnati

Can I interest you in a 6'3 CB who runs a 4.4 40 and didn't allow a single TD in his 3 years in college, and was a first-team All American?  I think the Jets would be sprinting up to give the card in when Sauce is available.  His comp is Richard Sherman, and would give the Jets their first true lock down corner since Revis Island roamed the Meadowlands.

5) New York Giants- Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State

Now it is the Giants' turn to sprint up to the podium.  They find their bookend with Andrew Thomas and solidify their OL for years to come with first team All American Ekwonu.  He will immediately start at right tackle, and will help keep Daniel Jones (or whoever the next QB in NY is) upright.

6) Carolina Panthers- Kenny Pickett, QB, Pitt

The first QB is off the board.  I don't think it is any secret that Matt Rhule recruited Pickett in college, and made all the googly eyes at Pickett's pro day.  Plus, if he wants to keep his job, Rhule needs better QB play.  Enter Pickett, the most NFL-ready QB in the draft.  Jokes about his hand size aside, he can come in Day 1, beat out Sam Darnold for the job, and make the franchise his own.

7) New York Giants (from Chicago Bears)- Kayvon Thibodeaux, DE Oregon

For most of the season, it was Hutchinson and Thibodeaux as the potential #1 pick.  Some scouts seem to have cooled on Thibodeaux a bit, but the Giants would be well on their way to an A+ draft grabbing him here at 7.  Their defense was 31st in the league last year in yards per play, so an immediate impact player like Thibodeaux should help immensely.

8) Atlanta Falcons- Garret Wilson, WR, Ohio State

The Matt Ryan era is over.  The Julio Jones era is over.  The... Russell Gage era is over?  Anyway, Marcus Mariota needs some weapons to throw to, and he currently just has Kyle Pitts and some no-name WRs.  Wilson immediately becomes WR1, with the big play ability to make the Falcons offense at least slightly scary.  Look for them to address their long term QB plans later in the draft/in 2023.

9) Seattle Seahawks (from Denver Broncos)- Charles Cross, OT, Mississippi State

The Seahawks traded Russell Wilson, and then finally decide to draft OL once he is gone!  I think they will give whoever their starting QB is the best chance to win by protecting him with Charles Cross.  Cross may be the best pass-protecting tackle in the draft, coming out of that spread Mike Leach offense.  He will be able to plug in and play at either tackle spots on Day 1.

10) New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks)- Drake London, WR, USC

The Jets already got Sauced.  Now they get a go-to WR for their young QB to grow with.  Drake London has amazing ball skills, elite size (6'4 220), and put up insane production even though he only played 8 games before breaking his ankle (88 catches, 1,084 yards, 7 TDs). The Jets have nailed their first two picks.

11) Washington Commanders- Kyle Hamilton, S, Notre Dame

As a Commanders fan, I am torn.  I know that they will want to trade back, and they likely will/should.  That said, if Kyle Hamilton is here, it would be damn near impossible not to draft him.  Hamilton is the top player on many experts' boards, and would be able to fit in immediately to sure up a shoddy pass defense.  He is a special player who made special plays at Notre Dame.  If he is still available at 11, the Commanders should pull the trigger and draft him.

12) Minnesota Vikings- Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU

The Vikings need secondary help, and they are able to get one of the top corners in the draft.  While I am not a big fan of Stingley's lack of production the past two years, everyone is still in love with the potential that he could be the player he was his freshman year.  The Vikings also get to grow their LSU contingency, as Stingley would join Patrick Peterson, Justin Jefferson, Danielle Hunter, and Darone Jones, who was LSU's defensive coordinator and secondary coach last year.

13) Houston Texans (from Cleveland Browns)- Jermaine Johnson II, DE, Florida State

Remember when the Texans had a terrifying front seven?  JJ Watt, Jadeeveon Clowney, Whitney Mercilus.  This was what helped them compete for the playoffs every year.  All 3 of those players are gone.  Again, this is a team that needs help everywhere, so why not take the best pass rusher available. Johnson was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, with 12 sacks and 18 tackles for loss in 12 starts, and he is still getting better.

14) Baltimore Ravens- Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

If the Ravens could just draft health, then they would be a playoff team.  However, as it is, they have a couple holes to fill.  They need OL depth, likely an edge rusher, but I have them taking McDuffie, the best CB available.  He can cover the slot, is a great open field tackler, and will help in the run game as well.  Plus, he is insurance for when Humphrey or Peters almost inevitably gets hurt.

15) Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami Dolphins)- Devin Lloyd, ILB, Utah

Rich Eisen had a young Eagles fan in the booth during the Combine, and when asked what he would tell their GM to do in the draft, the kid said something along the lines of "For the love of God, draft some linebackers!"  Well young man, you get your wish.  The Eagles land the #1 ILB in the draft in Lloyd, who has sideline-to-sideline range, is an awesome blitzer, and can immediately bring life into a defense that needs it.

16) New Orleans Saints (from Indianapolis Colts through Philadelphia Eagles)- Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

The Saints lost Terron Armstead to the Dolphins in free agency, so their biggest need is finding a new left tackle.  Penning is the best available, and plays angry.  He will immediately start for the Saints, who will work on keeping Jameis Winston healthy this year.

17) Los Angeles Chargers- Jordan Davis, DT, Georgia

The Chargers are not happy that Penning is gone, as they need to protect Justin Herbert.  However, with the insane amount of talent now in the AFC West, they also need to be able to get to opposing QBs.  Enter Davis, a Haloti Ngata-esque DT that will demand double teams on the inside, allowing better matchups for Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack on the edge and blitzers up the middle.

18) Philadelphia Eagles (from New Orleans Saints)- Chris Olave, WR, Ohio State

Another year, another WR to the Eagles in Round 1.  Only this time, it is to pair with the successful pick in DeVonta Smith from 2021.  Olave is a crisp route runner with top end speed and the production to match.  He can work in the slot or the outside, allowing options as the scheme dictates.

19) New Orleans Saints (from Philadelphia Eagles)- Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama

Another team that needs depth at WR, the Saints take a chance on the Williams, who may have been the #1 WR taken if he hadn't torn his ACL in the National Championship game.  He was first team All-American and All-SEC.  He was insane speed and playmaking ability, and can stretch the field.  His presence will allow a healthy Michael Thomas to thrive as well.

20) Pittsburgh Steelers- Malik Willis, QB, Liberty

In an ideal world, the Steelers would trade up to 11 to take Willis, and the Commanders would be picking here.  However, since I don't project trades, I can say I see the Steelers still ending up with Willis at the end of Day 1.  Signing Mitch Trubisky allows Mike Tomlin time to sit Willis and get him adjusted to the NFL game.  He has a ton of ability and a cannon of an arm.  He just needs to be able to put them together and up to NFL speed to become a top NFL QB.

21) New England Patriots- Nakobe Dean, ILB, Georgia

In 5 years, every other team will wonder how Nakobe Dean fell to the Patriots.  The heart and soul of the incredible 2021 Georgia defense, Dean's tape is off the charts.  The only reason he has fallen is because of measurables, which don't tell the whole story. He is a Devin Bush-type defender, who will make Pats fans think of McGinest, Bruschi, and Vrabel with his production.  Plus, he is an amazing person off the field, as a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, awarded for community service, and the captain of the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team for his community service efforts.

22) Green Bay Packers (from Las Vegas Raiders)- George Karlaftis, DE, Purdue

No first round WRs for Aaron Rodgers!!! HAHAHAHA!  I mean, why buck the trend with this pick.  Instead, the Packers take the best player available in Karlaftis, an edge rusher I have seen as high as the Top 10 in some mocks.  He can play numerous spots along the line, and can replace the pass rush production lost by Za'Darius Smith leaving.

23) Arizona Cardinals- Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas

Let's face it- the Cardinals offense didn't look the same when DeAndre Hopkins was hurt last year. Yes, Rondale Moore was a bright spot in his rookie year, but AJ Green isn't the same player he used to be, and Christian Kirk left for Jacksonville.  Treylon Burks has elite size and strength with solid speed.  He was a multi-sport athlete, and has natural shiftiness.  He could develop into an AJ Brown-esque WR.

24) Dallas Cowboys- Kenyon Green, OG, Texas A&M

The Cowboys used to have easily the best offensive line in football.  That has started to deteriorate, and now they have a hole at guard where Connor Williams once was.  Sure, guard is not a sexy pick, but Green immediately fills a need and takes a starting job on the OL. He also has experience at OT, so he provides depth for an oft-injured line.

25) Buffalo Bills- Andrew Booth Jr., CB, Clemson

The Bills have one of the best rosters in the entire NFL, but they do have a hole at CB.  Andrew Booth Jr is the best available, with the potential to grow into a true shutdown corner.  He has great ball skills and is also excellent against the run.  The rich get richer.  Will in translate into winning the AFC?

26) Tennessee Titans- Christian Watson, WR, North Dakota State

The Julio Jones experiment failed, and we aren't sure how long it will take Robert Woods to get back to 100% as he recovers from his ACL tear.  Watson is 6'4 and also runs a 4.36 40.  He can stretch the field for Woods and AJ Brown, and open up the defense more for Derrick Henry.  It is a great landing spot for Watson.

27) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Zion Johnson, OG, Boston College

I was extremely surprised when Ali Marpet announced his retirement following the 2021 season.  With Tom Brady coming back, the #1 need for the Bucs is to protect him and let him do his thing.  Zion Johnson takes over where Marpet left off, alongside Shaq Mason at the other guard spot. He can also play tackle in a pinch if needed.

28) Green Bay Packers- Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State

Ok, the Packers have two 1st round picks, so one HAS to be a WR, right?  They have no weapons for Aaron Rodgers anymore (which makes me chuckle), so they really need to draft one.  Dotson has top end speed for a WR, and can contribute in the return game.  Sure, he isn't Davante Adams, but it is a start.

29) Kansas City Chiefs (from San Francisco 49ers through Miami Dolphins)- Devonte Wyatt, DT, Georgia

The Chiefs' defense has a few holes in it, and Wyatt would be an excellent way to start fixing them.  Plugging him in next to Chris Jones could give the Chiefs a nightmare matchup for most interior OLs. Wyatt is an excellent run defender, with the tools to develop into a solid pass rushing DT like Jones.

30) Kansas City Chiefs- Daxton Hill, S, Michigan

The Honey Badger won't be returning to KC, so they have a massive hole at safety.  Yes, they added Justin Reid, but he is more of a strong safety in the box.  Daxton Hill is a nickle corner/free safety hybrid that can roam the secondary.  He has top tier speed and athleticism.  He would be a great addition to a defense that now has to deal with Russell Wilson in its division as well.

31) Cincinnati Bengals- Tyler Linderbaum, C, Iowa

The Bengals are a few offensive linemen away from being right back in the Super Bowl.  Tyler Linderbaum is the best available, and the top center in the draft.  He is an excellent blocker for both the passing and rushing attack.  He will be able to protect Joe Burrow up the middle.  It is a pick that has to be made to keep the future of the franchise bright.

32) Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams)- Desmond Ridder, QB, Cincinnati

Another QB!  While I don't think the Lions want to address this position with a first round pick, taking Ridder here instead of at 34 gives the Lions a 5th year option on the young QB.  Ridder has ton of experience and ability, as well as good size in a class full of shorter QBs.  He can produce with his feet, but prefers to work in the pocket.  He was outstanding for Cincinnati this season, leading them to the CFB Playoffs. He can be immediate competition for Jared Goff.

Will your team be happy when Night 1 of the Draft is over?  Who do I think you will take on Night 2?  Come back and find out!

The Nationals' Fire Sale... Ugh

So, the Nationals' decade of competitiveness, including division titles and the 2019 World Series Championship, is over.  We waived the white flag, closed the window, and traded away 8 players at the deadline, including Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.  Obviously I am sad.  I don’t like the idea of my team giving up on a season so quickly, nor do I like to see so many guys get traded away.  Some of them were understandable.  Brad Hand wasn’t the best closer in the world, and his failures the last few weeks were the main reason why we had to sell.  Getting a young catcher in Riley Adams for him was a good pickup.  He immediately became our #13 overall prospect, which goes to show you how barren our minor league system had gotten.  In fact, all of the prospects we received, except for Lane Thomans, an OF we got from St. Louis for Jon Lester, and Seth Shuman, a pitcher we got in our trade with Oakland, made our Top 30.  The rebuild needed to happen soon.  It is just jarring that it is now here.  And seeing so many guys go is a big kick in the gut for a fanbase who really likes a lot of them, especially the guys from the 2019 team.

Easily the hardest thing to see was Max and Trea leaving.  Max will go into the Hall of Fame as a National, which is nice, and maybe we bring him back at the end of the year. But he obviously wanted a chance to win this year, so trading him away is understandable, albeit heartbreaking.  Trea, on the other hand, is the kind of piece you want to build around.  He and Soto should have been the faces of the organization going forward.  I guess they just didn’t want to commit to him long-term, which is rather annoying.  The organization has yet to really commit to a position player with the exception of Ryan Zimmerman, or bringing in a guy like Jayson Werth in free agency.  But they let Harper go.  They let Rendon go.  They traded Trea.  It doesn’t give me a lot of hope that they will do the right thing and sign Soto to a MASSIVE extension as soon as possible (my guess would be that it would take 12 years, $432 million, which would be the biggest contract ever in total money, and the same average annual value as Mike Trout.  Probably throw in an opt-out after year 8 so that he can renegotiate at 30.  But they need to get this done now/before next season).

In terms of what the Nats got back, pitcher Josiah Gray and catcher Keibert Ruiz are now our top 2 prospects.  Gray started on Monday and pitched well.  He is going to be a rotation piece from now on, and hopefully can develop into a dominant starter over time.  Ruiz hit a HR in his first game in AAA last night.  His bat will not be a problem.  He can hit really well and I am looking forward to having him up, probably next year.  He isn’t the best defensive catcher yet, so I think Davey said they will keep him in AAA to have him catch every day.  Riley Adams, one of the other catchers we got, is much better on defense, but doesn’t have the same hitting ability.  He will be a good backup. We got another catcher from Oakland as well, Drew Millas, but he has a ways to go before he is MLB ready.  I wish we had gotten a 3B prospect in one of these deals, because I am not sold on Carter Kieboom as our every day 3B.  He doesn’t hit enough, and his defense is not on the level we need it to be.  Unfortunately, we are stuck with him right now, though I would like to see us call up Jake Noll to give him a shot at some point.

The pitchers we got besides Gray seem to be a mixed bag.  Gerardo Carrillo was another pitcher we got from LA for Max and Trea.  He is a starter in AA right now, and only 22.  He may stick as a starter, but could make it to the majors faster as a reliever. Mason Thompson, who we got from the Padres for Daniel Hudson along with a very young shortstop named Jordy Barley, is already in our bullpen, so he will probably stay there long term.  Aldo Ramirez, who we got form Boston for Kyle Schwarber, is only 20, but apparently was the best young arm in their system.  He is now our #11 prospect, ahead of some of our past 1st round picks, and has a very good chance of being a middle-of-the-rotation starter in a few years. Finally, Richard Guasch was one of the pieces we got from Oakland for Yan Gomes and Josh Harrison.  He could be a starter or reliever, they aren’t sure yet.

So, it will be a tough couple of years now.  The Nats won’t be competitive the rest of this year and likely next year at the very least.  I hope that they sign Soto long term just so we know that we have that foundation to build around.  I hope they do other things to help keep the fans happy and also get back to winning quickly.  But hopefully Gray and Ruiz develop into stars, some of the other guys develop into solid pieces, and we can be back within a few years.  I’d really like to trade Corbin in the offseason to free up extra money, but I don’t see that happening. I’d love it if Strasburg got healthy and stayed healthy, even if he isn’t in his World Series MVP form.  Regardless, I have hope that we will be sooner rather than later.  I hope to look back on this fire sale and see it as the end of the Nats' first great run, but the beginning of their second.  I hope I see Soto here long-term, Gray and Ruiz as All Stars, 1st round pick Brady House as the new star in the infield, next to Yasel Antuna, Luis Garcia, and Drew Mendoza, all solid-to-great players on a playoff team.  If that happens, then the pain of this past week and these next couple of season will all be worth it.
