RIP George Steinbrenner
Just a brief note on the passing of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Many people hated him for what they feel was monopolizing the game of baseball. I do not agree with them. If he were the owner of my team, doing what he did, I would have loved it. The Yankees were always in a position to win. There is no rule against spending a ton of your own money on free agents. He did it, and sometimes it worked. Other times it didn't. The truth is that any fan really wants an owner that is as committed to winning as The Boss was, even if they are afraid to admit it.

Jim,
ReplyDeleteAs a Mets fan, I had a love/hate relationship with the Boss. I would've loved for him to own my team and I hated the way he monopolized the best players (check out mediumlarge.com to see George in heaven trying to fire God). He almost owned the Indians instead of the Yanks (Think of how things would've been changed).
He was a winner even when he got in trouble. His last suspension prevented him from trading away young players like Jeter and Rivera (he wanted to do this), cementing a dynasty that lasts to this day. He even DIED at the best time. With no estate tax, no death tax in NY (it comes back in 2011), Gearge saved his family almost 700 million by dying now!
SHEESH!
Mean as he was, he was extremely generous and charitable. Countless number of children of fallen fireman and policemen went to college on George's dime.
He even poked fun at himself when he hosted SNL several years ago.
A winner, a visionary, an S.O.B.
God rest him.
