The Past Year, COVID-19, and the 2020 Mock Draft Update

Hi friends.

It has been almost a year since I last posted.  A lot of fun sports stuff has happened.  My Nats won the World Series!  It was amazing.  Also, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.  Tom Brady isn't a Patriot.  However, all of that has kind of faded into the past due to the worldwide pandemic that is COVID-19. There are, in fact, almost no sports happening right now.  March Madness was cancelled.  NHL and NBA stopped their seasons.  MLB has never started.  Honestly, if it wasn't for video games, WWE, horse racing, and NFL Free Agency/the Draft, I think I'd go mad.  It is a very strange and scary time, and sports has always been an escape for me during the worst times in my life.  Unfortunately, sports are not here to provide so many of us with the familiar comfort and distraction that we so desperately need.

A few days ago, on a particularly dark day, I actually wondered aloud whether or not I would bother doing my annual mock draft.  Everything just seems so bad that writing about the Draft seems like a somewhat silly activity.  However, I am still going to do my best to power through and get one done on here before the weird all-virtual NFL Draft starts on April 23.  I know that, due to this blog's antiquated design and me not actually being anyone important, almost no one reads it.  In fact, if I don't post this online, no one will be reading it other than me.  And I am actually ok with that.  I will be doing the Draft as much for me as for any potential readers.  I'll be doing it because it is sports, and it is my happy place.  It will bring me comfort and distraction, which is what sports are meant to do anyway.  I know I need it.  Hopefully, you will find some when you read the mock draft.

Stay safe.  Be well.

Round 7!  We made it!

1 (215). Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ryan Bates, OT, Penn State

3 (217). New York Jets: Chidi Okeke, OT, Tennessee State

4 (218). Oakland Raiders: Easton Stick, QB, North Dakota State

5 (219). Pittsburgh Steelers: Anthony Ratlift-Williams, WR, North Carolina

6 (220). Houston Texans: Yosuah Nijman, OT, Virginia Tech

7 (221). Cleveland Browns: Benny Snell Jr, RB, Kentucky

8 (222). Chicago Bears: Blace Brown, CB, Troy

9 (223). Cincinnati Bengals: Amani Bledsoe, DE, Oklahoma

10 (224). Detroit Lions: Albert Huggins, DT, Clemson

11 (225). Buffalo Bills: Darius West, S, Kentucky

12 (226). Green Bay Packers: Alexander Mattison, RB, Boise State

13 (227). Washington Redskins: Brett Rypien, QB, Boise State
The Skins have a dubious history of taking 1st round QBs, and then a QBin the later rounds that out-perform them.  Gus Frerotte was better than Heath Shuler.  Kirk Cousins was better than RG3.  Could the nephew of former Skins Superbowl MVP and 2-time Champion Mark Rypien be the answer when Drew Lock struggles?

14 (228). Buffalo Bills: Dre Greenlaw, OLB, Arkansas

15 (229). Detroit Lions: Chris Slayton, DT, Syracuse

16 (230). Atlanta Falcons: Alex Wesley, WR, Northern Colorado

17 (231). New Orleans Saints: Dakota Allen, ILB, Texas Tech

18 (232). New York Giants: Khalen Saunders, DT, Western Illinois

19 (233). Miami Dolphins: Qadree Ollison, RB, Pittsburgh

30 (244). New Orleans Saints: Jackson Barton, OT, Utah

31 (245). New York Giants: Iman Marshall, CB, USC

32 (246). New England Patriots: Brandon Snyder, S, South Dakota State

33 (247). Minnesota Vikings: Fred Johnson, OG, Florida

34 (248). Arizona Cardinals: Demarkus Lodge, WR, Ole Miss

35 (249). Arizona Cardinals: LJ Scott, RB, Michigan State

36 (250). Minnesota Vikings: Michael Jackson, CB, Miami

37 (251). Los Angeles Rams: Alex Bars, OG, Notre Dame

38 (252). New England Patriots: Trace McSorley, QB/WR, Penn State
The Patriots get a super athletic QB turned WR as a new weapon for Brady?  Of course.  McSorley could be the new Julian Edelman.

39 (253). Washington Redskins: Mike Bell, S, Fresno State

40 (254). Arizona Cardinals: Emeke Egbule, OLB, Houston

We did it!  All 7 Rounds!  Thank you so much for following along, for reading, and for caring.  It is a labor of love, and I am always thrilled to do it.  Now, get your snacks, grab some beer, and get ready for 3 days of the NFL Draft!

2019 NFL Mock Draft: Round 6

Round 6, which may as well be renamed the Tom Brady round.  Yes, the greatest QB of all time was famously picked at #199 overall, showing everyone that sometimes no one knows what they are talking about.  Maybe there is a Hall of Famer in this group also.

27 (200). Los Angeles Chargers: Gardner Minshew, QB, Washington State
Chargers taking a flyer on a smart QB from a pass-heavy system as a potential successor to Phillip Rivers.

28 (201). Kansas City Chiefs: Trysten Hill, DT, UCF

29 (202). New Orleans Saints: Maxx Crosby, DE, Eastern Michigan

30 (203). Los Angeles Rams: Greg Dortch, WR, Wake Forest

31 (204). Detroit Lions: Jonathan Crawford, S, Indiana

32 (205). New England Patriots: Jalin Moore, RB, Appalachian State

33 (206). Washington Redskins: Jaylen Smith, WR, Louisville

One round to go!  Has your favorite sleeper pick gone yet?  If not, check out Round 7!

2019 NFL Mock Draft: Round 5

Round 5.  Players drafted in Round 5 since 2000?  Richard Sherman.  Kam Chancellor.  Tyreek Hill. Robert Mathis. Jordan Howard.  That is some of the best.  There are still fantastic players to be had in Round 5.

1 (139). Arizona Cardinals: Isaac Nauta, TE, Georgia

2 (140). Oakland Raiders: TJ Edwards, ILB, Wisconsin

3 (141). Pittsburgh Steelers: Isaiah Prince, OT, Ohio State

4 (142). New York Giants: Bobby Okereke, LB, Stanford

5 (143). New York Giants: Elijah Holyfield, RB, Georgia

6 (144). Cleveland Browns: Demarcus Christmas, DT, Florida State

7 (145). Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Edwards, S, Kentucky

8 (146). Detroit Lions: Kaden Smith, TE, Stanford

9 (147). Buffalo Bills: Felton Davis III, WR, Michigan State

10 (148). Denver Broncos: John Cominsky, DT, Charleston College (WV)

11 (149). Cincinnati Bengals: Alize Mack, TE, Notre Dame

12 (150). Green Bay Packers: Jonathan Ledbetter, DE, Georgia

13 (151). Miami Dolphins: Clayton Thorson, QB, Northwestern
The Dolphins finally take a QB. Thorson could develop, but I imagine he will be the backup for the eventual next QB taken in the 2020 draft.

14 (152). Atlanta Falcons: Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame

15 (153). Washington Redskins: Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston

16 (154). Carolina Panthers: Rashad Fenton, CB, South Carolina

17 (155). Cleveland Browns: Christian Miller, OLB, Alabama

18 (156). Denver Broncos: Diontae Johnson, WR, Toledo

19 (157). Tennessee Titans: Nate Herbig, OG, Stanford

20 (158). Buffalo Bills: Charles Omenihu, DE, Texas

21 (159). Seattle Seahawks: Khari Willis, S, Michigan State

22 (160). Baltimore Ravens: Lil'Jordan Humphrey, WR, Texas

23 (161). Houston Texans: Foster Moreau, TE, LSU

24 (162). Chicago Bears: Matt Gay, K, Utak
KICKER!  I mean, think about all of the games the Bears lost because of hitting uprights.  Kicker is the #1 need for the Bears. I just don't think they pull the trigger until Round 5.

25 (163). Philadelphia Eagles: Anthony Johnson, WR, Buffalo

26 (164). Indianapolis Colts: Jordan Miller, CB, Washington

27 (165). Dallas Cowboys: Tony Pollard, RB, Memphis

28 (166). Los Angeles Chargers: Ryan Connelly, ILB, Wisconsin

29 (167). Kansas City Chiefs: Ryquell Armstead, RB, Temple

30 (168). New Orleans Saints: Keesean Johnson, WR, Fresno State

31 (169). Los Angeles Rams: Josiah Tauaefa, LB, UT-San Antonio

32 (170). Cleveland Browns: BJ Autry, OG, Jacksonville State

33 (171). New York Giants: Darius Slayton, WR, Auburn

34 (172). Atlanta Falcons: Tyree Jackson, QB, Buffalo
Matt Ryan's current backup is still Matt Schaub.  It may be time to bring in a young project instead.  He is raw, and his comp is Ryan Mallet, who used to back up Matt Ryan.  It seems perfect.

35 (173). Washington Redskins: Drew Sample, TE, Washington

Only 2 more rounds!

Day 3 of the Draft is where teams look to fill out their rosters and try to find those hidden gems that will turn into Pro Bowlers.  Who from the 2019 class will be that special diamond in the rough?  We start with Round 4.

1 (103). Arizona Cardinals: Joejuan Williams, CB, Vanderbilt

2 (104). San Francisco 49ers: Jaquan Johnson, S, Miami

3 (105). New York Jets: Andy Isabella, WR, Massachusettes

4 (106). Oakland Raiders: Penny Hart, WR, Georgia State

10 (112). Buffalo Bills: Trayveon Williams, RB, Texas A&M

11 (113). Baltimore Ravens: Carl Granderson, DE, Wyoming

12 (114). Green Bay Packers: Drue Tranquill, ILB, Notre Dame

13 (115). Carolina Panthers: Terrill Hanks, LB, New Mexico State
