The greatest three days of the calendar year have returned! It is the 2024 NFL Draft! Hello again, friends. It is that time of year when I remember I have this little site, spend a few days doing a mock of all 7 rounds of the Draft, and then seeing how all the chips fall. As always, I don't project any trades, though I anticipate there being a ton of them Thursday night. What does your team need? Where will your favorite college players go? Here are my answers. Hope you enjoy! The Chicago Bears are on the clock:
Round 1
1) Chicago Bears (from Carolina)- Caleb Williams, QB, USC
There is no secret or surprise here. Caleb Williams is the best QB prospect we have seen in a few years. He can do it all. He won a Heisman. He made a subpar USC team competitive. The Bears get their franchise QB, and they will be thrilled to have him. As an aside, as a fellow alum of Gonzaga College High School, I am so proud of Caleb. Not just of everything he has done on the field, but the man he is off of the field. His charity is great. His commitment to his family is wonderful. The Bears are getting a great person and a great player.
2) Washington Commanders- Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
Hey. No Dan Snyder! Now, the Commanders just need their new face of the franchise, and they get him in Jayden Daniels. Comps to Lamar Jackson are very exciting. He had an exceptional year, putting up big numbers and winning the Heisman. He fits into Kliff Kingsbury's offense well. As long as he can limit the big hits he takes, he can be the guy for years in DC.
3) New England Patriots- Drake Maye, QB, UNC
Well, Mac Jones didn't work out. I guess deciding not to actually have an offensive coordinator hurts. With Belichick now gone, New England resets with Maye as their QB of the future. That said, I think he sits the first few weeks, since Jacoby Brissett is a capable bridge starter. Maye is prospect 2A, along with Daniels. He can do it all, even though he wasn't as great this past year as the year before. If the Patriots can surround him with pieces, he will be fine.
4) Arizona Cardinals- Marvin Harrison Jr, WR, Ohio State
This has to be the pick. I don't think the Cardinals will trade out, just because MHJr is that good. He can be the new Larry Fitzgerald, and that will make Kyler Murray very happy. Elite size, elite ability, elite production. It is a no-brainer pick.
5) Los Angeles Chargers- Malik Nabers, WR, LSU
Were I to project trades, this is likely the first place I've had one. I think that John Harbaugh would love to get Harrison, but with gone, the Chargers would be more willing to listen to a team that needs a QB. In this mock, though, they stay here and take the #2 WR on the board in Nabers. WR is a position of need after Mike Williams and Keenan Allen left. Nabers was super-productive, and will immediately be Justin Herbert's #1 target.
6) New York Giants- Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
Call me crazy for not having a QB go here, but I just think the Giants will run it back for one more year with Daniel Jones, Tommy Devito, and Drew Lock, mainly because of all the cash invested in Jones. So, they instead get the best offensive weapon available in Odunze. He helped make Michael Penix look great with his ability, and the Giants don't have anything close to a #1 WR. He will be a team leader like he was at UW as well, and can help reboot that offense.
7) Tennessee Titans- Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
Another no-brainer pick here. The Titans have an obvious need at LT, and Joe Alt is the best all-around offensive line prospect. Putting him at the LT next to 2023 first round pick and left guard Peter Skoronski will help protect Will Levis' blind side for years to come.
8) Atlanta Falcons- Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama
Before free agency, the Falcons were one of those QB-needy teams. Enter Kirk Cousins (possibly because of tampering?), and now Atlanta can take the best defensive player in the draft. Turner is a monster off the edge, and can immediately become the best pass rusher (and maybe best player) on the Falcons' defense.
9) Chicago Bears- Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn State
The Bears are back on the clock. They have already added Keenan Allen in the offseason. They added D'Andre Swift. They have weapons for Caleb Williams. And, with the top 3 WRs off the board, it is very likely that they'd trade out of this pick. Wherever they end up drafting, I think they will now do the smart thing and get an OT to protect their QB's blindside. Why not pick the guy who blocked for Caleb in high school? Yes, I am reuniting Caleb with his Gonzaga College High School teammate, Olu Fashanu. Olu was phenomenal at Penn State, and might have the absolute highest ceiling of any tackle prospect. I just thinks this makes the most sense, and would make me really happy.
10) New York Jets- Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia
The Jets are still all-in with Aaron Rodgers, and they have an excellent defense, so they need to get the best weapon available for their old QB. Brock Bowers, when healthy, was essentially a cheat code. He is big, fast, and has fantastic hands. He can't be guarded by linebackers, so he can open up the pass game due to at least a safety having to be on him full time. NYJ fans will be very happy, as long as Rodgers' legs don't explode again.
11) Minnesota Vikings- JJ McCarthy, QB, Michigan
There is essentially no chance that the Vikings will be making this pick at 11. They acquired an extra 1st in order to move up. But, again, I don't project trades, so I have them drafting the best QB available here with JJ McCarthy. To be honest, the more I hear JJ in interviews, the more I like him. I think he has all the ability of the top guys, even though he wasn't necessarily asked to demonstrate it this past year. Still, he can make every throw, was a leader of the National Champions, and can come in and take that starting job. Having Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison there to throw to will certainly help his development.
12) Denver Broncos- Bo Nix, QB, Oregon
Spoiler alert- I don't think Zach Wilson will be the starting QB of the Broncos next year. While a fresh start will be good for him, Sean Payton will want his guy. Bo Nix fits that mold and that offense. With comps to Drew Brees and Tony Romo, Nix can definitely play in the NFL. He also has a ton of college experience, and has met with the Broncos more than any other QB. It makes sense.
13) Las Vegas Raiders- JC Latham, OT, Alabama
The Raiders could be in play to try to get a QB. In fact, if you look a little further down, I have them getting one in Round 2 (again, no trade projections). So, they instead fill a big need at right tackle with Latham. He is the #1 right tackle prospect, and will be a plug-and-play starter opposite Kolton Miller.
14) New Orleans Saints- Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State
The Saints need help at both tackles. While they say they haven't given up on 2022 #1 pick Trevor Penning at LT, RT Ryan Ramczyk is hurt all the time. They take Fuaga, a mauling right tackle who can give them options along the line to protect their investment in Derek Carr.
15) Indianapolis Colts- Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo
The Colts did a great job of re-signing some of their big free agents, so the biggest hole that remains on their roster is a cornerback. Quinyon Mitchell has it all. He has size at 6'. He has speed, with a 4.33 40 yard dash. He has strength, with 20 reps of 225 at the combine. As his prospect page says, "He is built like a RB, tackles like a safety, and has the ball skills of a cornerback." That's pretty damn good.
16) Seattle Seahawks- Troy Fautanu, OT/G, Washington
Every now and then, a team takes a local prospect and it is a perfect fit. The Seahawks' biggest draft need is on the offensive line, and Fautanu is the best prospect available. He also has position flexibility, having played some guard in his time at UW, along with being a top tackle prospect. He can instantly come in and anchor the line for the new coaching regime in Seattle.
17) Jacksonville Jaguars- Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama
The Jags' GM, Trent Baalke, said point-blank that cornerback is the biggest team need. The best prospect available at the position is Arnold from Alabama. Arnold was a first-team All-American, leader of the Alabama defense, and comps to Marshon Lattimore. He is also an excellent human being. Do yourself a favor and go find any interview where he is talking about his family, especially the clip from the Combine of him discussing his mother. He is the kind of guy you root for, and you hope your team drafts.
18) Cincinnati Bengals- Byron Murphy II, DT, Texas
The Bengals were terrible at stopping the run last year, and that was with DJ Reader on the team. Now, he is in Detroit, so the Bengals need to fill that space in the defensive line. Murphy is ready to step in to the middle of the line, either at nose over the center or as a 3-technique, and cause havoc to opposing offensive lines.
19) Los Angeles Rams- Jared Verse, DE, Florida State
The retirement of Aaron Donald just leaves a massive hole in the Rams' pass rush. He was able to generate pressure for them, even when they didn't have the best guys rushing off of the edge. Now that he is gone, the Rams need someone to recreate that pressure, but now from the outside. Jared Verse was the star of an excellent Seminoles defense. He will bring that explosiveness that the Rams need.
20) Pittsburgh Steelers- Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia
The Steelers made huge moves this offseason, bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to their QB room. Even though they traded Dionte Johnson, I think they take a lineman in order to protect their QB investments. Mims is a HUGE tackle with excellent technique, but only 8 career starts. Still, he can learn on the job, and make life hell for the talented edge rushers in the AFC North.
21) Miami Dolphins- Graham Barton, C, Duke
The Dolphins need help all along their offensive line. A prospect like Graham Barton would be a perfect fit. While he mainly played left tackle at Duke, he is being projected as a center in the NFL. Still that position versatility, and the fact that he is as consistent a blocker as you will see in college football, makes him a valuable piece to protect Tua.
22) Philadelphia Eagles- Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson
It would be really easy just to have a Georgia player here, since the Eagles always seem to load up on Dawgs. However, Nate Wiggins is graded higher at the biggest position of need. The Eagles secondary wasn't great last year, and lacks depth. Wiggins can come in and help immediately, with great size and speed.
23) Minnesota Vikings (from Cleveland through Houston)- Jer'Zhan Newton,
DT, Illinois
Again, the Vikings likely won't be making this pick, since they will trade up for a QB. But, if they do end up taking it, they will fill a big hole on their defensive like with Newton. Newton, the Big 10 DPOY and first-team All-American, will inject youth and energy to both their pass rush and run defense.
24) Dallas Cowboys- Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma
Well, Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were all in. That apparently means not signing free agents or extending players, so they will just hope they draft well. Adding Guyton to their OL would be a great start. He is a prospect on the rise. While he has mainly played right tackle, I think he may swing to the other side and replace Tyrone Smith on Dak's blind side.
25) Green Bay Packers- Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa
The Packers surprised everyone last year, making it to the playoffs and thwomping Dallas. Now, they only need to fill some position holes on their roster in order to continue their success. DeJean would be able to fit into multiple spots in the Green Bay secondary. He can play corner, safety, and nickle. He is also a prolific return option, which was basically the only offense Iowa had last year.
26) Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA
Latu may end up being the best defensive player from this draft class. Were it not for some injury concerns earlier in his career at Washington (a neck injury that the doctors at UW would not clear), he may have been a top 10 pick. He has excellent side and production for an edge rusher, and can flourish as a OLB in the 3-4 defense of the Buccaneers.
27) Arizona Cardinals (from Houston)- Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State
Another edge rusher off the board. This would be a great spot for a team that wants to trade up into the 1st round for a player, but if Arizona stays put, they address the biggest hole on their defense with the best player available. Chop Robinson can line up opposite Zaven Collins and give the Cardinals a formidable young pass rush.
28) Buffalo Bills- Brian Thomas Jr., WR, LSU
Can you name the #1 WR in Buffalo now that Stefon Diggs was traded? Exactly. No offense to Justin Shorter, Khalil Shakir, and Curtis Samuels, but they are 2s or 3s at best. Thomas immediately becomes the #1 WR for Josh Allen. He led FBS in receiving TDs last year with 17, has excellent size and speed, and will be an upgrade to that receiver room.
29) Detroit Lions- Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri
For the first time in a long time, the Lions are in the position of being able to just take the best player available, or add depth to a position. They do that here with Darius Robinson. A true DE that can play opposite Aiden Hutchinson for years, Robinson was a first-team SEC beast. Plus, he is a Detroit native. To hear his name called in Detroit, getting drafted to the Lions, will be an amazing moment.
30) Baltimore Ravens- Jackson Powers-Johnson, C, Oregon
The Ravens need a ton of help along the offensive line. While Tyler Linderbaum was drafted to be their starting center last year, they take another versatile center in Rimington Award winner Powers-Johnson. He has also played guard, so he can help fill multiple needs along the line, which needs to keep Lamar Jackson upright if the Ravens want to make it back to the AFC Championship game and beyond.
31) San Francisco 49ers- Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama
I really thought the 49ers had the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but in the end, they just couldn't cover KC's weapons for long enough. While they have added significant pieces to their pass rush, SF needs secondary help. In addition to having an amazing nickname, Kool-Aid has the game to make it in the pros. A 3-year starter for Nick Saban's defense, he has fantastic cover skills, excellent ball skills, and can even work in the return game.
32) Kansas City Chiefs- Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas
The Chiefs WRs drop too many passes, and Rasheed Rice might be in trouble with the law. This seems obvious. Give Mahomes more weapons. Mitchell was a force this season. He has that big play ability, and can go high point a ball with the best of them. Patrick Mahomes will be a happy man if Mitchell is the pick to end Thursday night.
Round 2
33) Carolina Panthers- Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina
Carolina's first pick in the draft gives them a weapon for Bryce Young. Adding Dionte Johnson was nice, but he is in the last year of his contract.
34) New England Patriots- Jordan Morgan, OT, Arizona
35) Arizona Cardinals- Ennis Rakestraw Jr., CB, Missouri
36) Washington Commanders- Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU
37) Los Angeles Chargers- Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia

I could see the Commanders adding another OT, edge rusher, or secondary piece here. Instead, they get a rising prospect in Coleman to bring significant size (6'3, 213) to their WR room, opposite Terry McLaurin and the speedy Jahan Dotson.

The upstart Texans finally get involved in the Draft. After making huge successful splashes in the first round last year, here they add the best CB available to help improve that young defensive core.

Do I actually think Penix will fall to Round 2? No. I think the Raiders will make a move for him later in Day 1, or they will just take him at 13. It will be a great spot for him to start his career.

I think the Ravens need a similar QB to Lamar (though not on the same overall skill level) to back him up now that Tyler Huntley is in Cleveland, and I don't think 38 year old Josh Johnson is the answer. And there it is! I am sure that now I've published this, numerous trades will happen and/or the Falcons will have picks taken away due to tampering, but what is done is done.
